Sailor Moon is out of this world in so many ways!Ĭardcaptor Sakura was created by Clamp in 1996, and serialized as an anime in 1998. Sailor Moon is one of the core inspirations that other magical girl anime producers use to structure their series. Luna gives the girls (Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Soldiers) their powers in the form of rods, brooches, and lockets, and each of them adopt their new magical girl name. Along the way, they meet new friends and foes that help to make their journey an exciting one. Sailor Moon was created by Naoko Takeuchi in 1992, and it follows the adventures of a young girl named Usagi Tsukino as she masters the powers she has been given by her new pet companion, Luna. Of course, over the years, there have been a few titles that have stuck out above the rest. With Sally the Witch came the magical girl genre, filled with stars and hearts and frills, along with adventures, friendships, and life lessons. Here, Sally finds happiness and friendship, until she has to go back to her home world in the final episode. However, she mistakenly teleports herself to Earth, and immediately finds herself in some trouble! She defends two schoolgirls with her magic, and decides to stick around by disguising herself as a Human child. Its plot resembles that of an average magical girl anime - Sally, the witch princess from the magic kingdom, decides she is going to visit the mortal realm. It premiered in July 1966, and unassumingly would go on to be the catalyst that spawned the magical girl genre that we know and love today. Sally the Witch is remembered as the very first magical girl anime to ever grace the screens of early anime fans. Thirty to forty classic paintings and art pieces are selected each year to be featured and set designs begin right away. This year’s Pageant was helmed by Director Diane Challis Davy whose involvement began as a volunteer some 24 years ago. You see kids grow up, including our own,” continues Elaine. “We work with many of the same people every year. He’s been in the show every year since along with both of our sons.” Volunteering at the Pageant has been equated to a summer camp for adults that happens to include kids. “Harvey was the right height,” recalls Elaine, “they grabbed him right off the patio and put him into the cast. He is now 32.” Her husband, Harvey, was cast in 1996 as part of Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” work which has been the show finale since 1936. “We moved here from De-troit and got involved when our youngest was 9 years old. “Volunteering at the Pageant becomes a passion that you look forward to all year long,” shares Elaine Fleisher, a volunteer stage runner assisting cast members. This volunteer team is in addition to the set and supporting volunteers that keep the entire production flowing. As well, a full volunteer design and makeup crew creates the costumes and Styrofoam “heads” the artists follow for each cast member. Casting for the pageant begins in early January and members are chosen by actual size and characteristics in line with the images in the featured work of art. There are two sets of 150 cast members rotating one full week on and one week off for the duration of the Pageant each July and August. From the front orchestra pit to the backstage wardrobe and makeup rooms, the rotating side stages and the main sound stage which houses many of the elaborate hand-crafted set designs, the Bowl becomes a home away from home for many of the performers and volunteers. Tucked away in the hillsides of Laguna Canyon, the serene, 2,600 seat Irvine Bowl amphitheater was donated by James Irvine in 1940 out of his love for art thus giving a permanent home for the Pageant. In fact, as far as one can tell, Pageant of the Masters is the world’s only true full-scale living art production using real people to recreate historical art pieces on an outdoor stage. This “living pictures” art was so captivating that throughout the last near nine decades leading artists, narrators, make-up artists, composers and designers have grown the now “Pageant of the Masters” into one of the world’s most masterful recurring living art productions. THE BEDROCK OF LAGUNA BEACH’S PAGEANT OF THE MASTERSĪ retail clerk, a retired teacher, a lawyer, a young student on summer break, these are just a few of the statuses of the 300+ dedicated volunteers that make up the Pageant cast and stage crew at the legendary Pageant of the Masters living art experience held annually in Laguna Beach.Īs part of the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts which began in 1932, showcasing art as “living pictures” was incorporated into the Festival’s second year and was then titled “Spirit of the Masters Pageant”. Educators sternly banned the telling of fairy tales in 1854, Gustave Flaubert instructed writers “to confine ourselves to relating the facts.” The rise of scientific and rationalist thought saw the reputation of fantasy sink – it was seen as childish, superstitious, and even dangerous. Where would Hamlet be without the ghost? Where would Macbeth be without the witches, or A Midsummer Night’s Dream without the fairies? Homer’s The Odyssey is filled with witches, nymphs and one-eyed giants, as is The Aenead and Ovid’s Metamorphoses indeed, the Bible itself is crammed with marvels. Until the Renaissance, tales of heroes and monsters and magical talismans formed the mainstream of the world’s literature. This very boundlessness serves the moral purpose of the tale, which is precisely to teach where boundaries lie.’ As Marina Warner says, in ‘ From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairy Tales and their Tellers’ ‘Anything can happen (in fairytale). Those ancient storytellers were both trying to make sense of the mysterious workings of the world and teaching their audience the secret boundaries of behavior and belief. When our ancestors crouched about the camp fire at night, it was stories of gods and heroes, monsters and marvels, which they told to hold back the terrors of the night. I think fantasy is best described as a kind of fiction that evokes wonder, mystery or magic, a sense of possibility beyond the ordinary world in which we live, and yet which reflects and comments upon that known world.įantasy drives its tap root into the deep rich soil of myth and legend, fairytale and folklore. Still others believe writers of fantasy fiction have taken on the mantle of the ancient myth-makers, creating a new archetypal framework for a Nietzschean world that has outgrown the mouldy old myths of the past. Other people believe it is the work of the Devil (I kid you not). Some people believe it is nothing but escapist trash, and should be banned along with fast food and lollies. Perhaps we should start by defining exactly what fantasy fiction is. Tolkien’s illustration of the dragon Smaug for The Hobbitīut why? Why are such stories so enormously popular? And, more interestingly, why are they so profoundly important? Why should we not only be allowing our children to include fantasy in their reading diet, but actually encouraging it? One publishing house in the US has even issued their staff with a T-shirt that reads ‘Unicorns Sell!’ It is clear that the world is hungry for tales of epic quests, dragons, vampires, wizards, magic rings and cloaks of invisibility. This list includes Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Harry Potter movies, Star Wars, and Shrek. Of the top grossing movies of all time, only the first of the Top 10 – Titanic – is NOT a fantasy. Lewis (120 million for the Narnia series), Robert Jordan (44 million), Terry Brooks (21 million), Dragonlance (20 million) and the Artemis Fowl books (18 million) – and it is clear that fantasy is the most popular of narrative forms. Add the sales of J.R.R Tolkien (150 million for The Lord of the Rings alone), C.S. Their books have sold more than 500 million copies in the last dozen years. Stephanie Meyer, and her sparkling vampires. Rowling and the boy wizard with the lightning scar.Ĭhristopher Paolini, and the poor farm boy who tames a dragon. Even the original case is in excellent condition, with perfect latches and hinges, and a totally unfaded and unsoiled bright orange lining. The white pearloid pickguard is bright with no yellowing, as are the original plastic tipped Kluson "double-line" tuners. This one is as close to new as any vintage Fender i've ever had the chance to play, a true time capsule guitar with no fading, no greening, and no corrosion. I put a fresh set of strings on it and plugged it into my '65 Deluxe Reverb and it instantly came to life! Beautiful rich tone, with absolutely no static or scratchiness in the pots or pickup. The frets have absolutely zero wear, the original lacquer on the neck is still as glossy and new as it was in 1966, and the chrome hardware looks as though it were plated yesterday. I bought it from the girl's son in 2010, and aside from a couple minor spots where the dried out nitro has flaked off due to age (not wear) it remains in pristine condition. Apparently the little girl preferred her acoustic to this electric, and it was basically put in a closet and was untouched and unplayed for nearly 40 years. This one is almost too good to be true, but it is! It's a 100% original 1966 Fender Musicmaster II in Daphne Blue that was purchased new in 1967 for a 10 year old girl's Christmas gift, along with a Mel Bay Beginner's Guitar Manual. One of the neat things about these old Fenders is that every one is different, and every one has it's own musical personality. It plays amazingly well, and although it exibits similarities in feel to "smokey" above, this one has more attack and a noticibly different overall feel. After confirming it had never been modified it was put back together and received a professional set-up. In fact, the first time this one was ever opened up was just prior to my purchase of it. 100% original, including the pickup, wiring, pots, pickguard, Kluson tuners, etc. The heel date on the neck confirms this is indeed a '69 though, so its an oddball for sure. This has some interesting and somewhat unique details, as most 1969's I've seen have the later/revised block letter "MUSIC MASTER" headstock logo, whereas this one has the early style Musicmaster II logo and gold Fender script usually not seen this late into the 60's. its just a beautiful original Fender, and a joy to play. Aside from a few tiny marks on the finish this could almost pass for "new old stock". This one is as clean as a pin, and probably was never played outside of the original owner's home. On the other end of the spectrum is this 1969 "Dakota Red" Musicmaster II. |
